Visitor Controller Settings on a Shared Lot
« on: July 14, 2015, 10:53:25 PM »
I'm in the process of creating a neighborhood to be shared and I'm considering using the Visitor Controller to set specifics on a few of my lots. Will these setting stick when I share this neighborhood? Will the settings only stick if the people who download it also have VC installed?

Hey there, Phaenoh! Welcome to Simbology!

Imagine reading you here... :)

Having the VC installed is indeed the minimal requirement for the settings to hold. But I seem to have heard that - unlike shared lots - shared 'hoods don't inherit CC and their settings. And I think it makes sense, too.

Even with a shared lot, it depends on whether you clean it up first, in which case the settings on the lot will only stick if the downloader does indeed have the VC in their hacks folder.  It isn't necessary for the VC to be on the lot, unless the downloader wishes to adjust the settings.

I imagine that with a shared hood, the same thing would apply, and you would need to point the downloader here to get their own copy of the VC.

Hi, Phaenoh!  BO and ZZ have told you everything I can think of, but I'll try to test it for you.

The shared 'hood sounds interesting already.

BO, Yup, I knew I'd need to include a list of required CC for my hood. I'm glad to know that if I put the work into setting VC settings they will stick. I assume whoever doesn't want the VC settings can just not have the VC installed and then the lots will act like normal?

Zeph, what do you mean by 'clean it up first'? Like, remove all the CC with CI, or something else? I thought I had read that the VC didn't need to be included on the lot after doing the settings, so thank you for the confirmation of that. I think I've had the mod, but I haven't used it much at all, so I'm not as familiar with it as I'd like to be, hence the questions. >.<

Miros, thanks for the offer! I have my little sister doing most of my testing on my laptop, so I've got that covered. :)

Thanks for the welcomes everyone! The hood is a entire Pleasantview renovation. Here's a teaser pic! http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa210/Phaenoh/PleasantMap_zpsbonouydw.jpg~original Look for it on MTS on July 19th.

It looks somehow tidier than the original, but I like it!

Yes, by *clean it up* I did indeed mean using the Clean Installer.  Since the settings from the VC are somewhere in the lot segment, I can't honestly be sure if those settings would remain if the downloader did not install the VC.

Rather than guessing, why not load a test hood with the VC settings and see how it's handled.  You'll have to have VC in your downloads when you package the neighborhood in order to get the lot settings.

Just for my education, in sharing a neighborhood, do you package the individual lots, then put those packages and the map in an archive, or do you not bother with the packaging?

Good idea to do a test on the VC stuff as well.

No, to share a hood, all that is required is zipping up the N### folder that the neighborhood is in. It is important to make sure that the N number is unique however, so when sharing a hood, it is a good idea to pick a high number and change all your files to that name. I use Bulk Rename Utility to do it for me quickly and accurately. Though not required, I also plan on packaging the individual lots to share simply as lots because I like to offer as many options for the user as possible. Some people also share the map in addition, others do not. I won't be for this upload as everyone already sorta has the Pleasantview map. (The actual map isn't available in the create a hood menu, but we all had a Pleasantview at one point.)

Zeph, yes, I believe the game comes with a slightly different Pleasantview map.

I'm not seeming to have much luck with the Visitor Controller. I'm also doing Objects States on my comm lots, so I move in a sim, set lights/music/everything, set the VC, make sim a Townie, set lot to community, save and load neigborhood. Upon testing just within the neighborhood, I've lost my VC settings. I'm guessing that it's the change lot zoning that is unsetting the VC, how do you normally set the VC?

It's definitely changing the lot zoning, as the process for setting on a comm lot is different from a house, dorm, etc.  You need to have a sim visit, spawn the VC and then set the settings you want.  In game, these settings should remain even after your sim has left, but the VC will, of course, disappear.

After poking around with it more, I don't think it will do what I want it to do. It only bans or allows, but what I need is a way to actively call for a certain type of sim, like I want all the coaches to show up at my gym, and I want all the playables with pets to show up at the pet park. Unless I ban everyone who isn't exclusively what I want for the flavor of my lot, I'm still unlikely to get who I want to show up. Though, it is nice to be able to ban the kids from the bar. Is there something I'm missing about the VC?

You'd need a different version of the VC for that.  Chris Hatch has something in his T&A/A&N pack is similar to what you want; it is available separately.  With what he did, you can set it up so only certain ages or aspirations can visit a lot.  It should be possible to further tune this to allow or restrict visitors based on career, skills, badges, personality.  Basically anything attached to a sim could become a filter.

Unfortunately pets aren't an attribute of a sim, so there could be not test for that.
Also unfortunate is it is incompatible with VC.

Will the meeting controller also *autonomously* call in the sims that are linked to the tokens? Or does it *require* the player to start the meeting every time?

From reading the description, I think it's the latter. And I guess that's not the way Phaenoh intends it to be...

Perhaps one would, indeed. I'm not sure *I* would, though.

And no, it's not a matter of permission. Inge doesn't care who mods and re-releases her work. It's open to anyone.
But I've noticed that I'm taking on too many requests already, while my heart doesn't seem to be that much into modding anymore. So were I to take this on, it would probably not be done before "Sint Juttemis" - which is dutch for "when hell freezes over". I don't want Phaenoh to wait for that. It wouldn't do either of us any good.

I suppose, though, that if the modification was fairly straightforward, a pair of talented modders could help Phaenoh alter it herself.

It's not really that straight forward.  As the CLP I linked is CH's, he may be open to making the desired modifications.

I'm sure there's no problem with Inge's Meeting mod working with either VC or the CLP I linked.  The meeting mod is a teleporter, more like a specialized cat, compared to the lot populators.

Can the meeting mod do what Phaenoh wants?  Only with player assistance in starting the meeting whenever the sim is on a community lot that limits who can visit.

The community lot populator, when properly modified, would be able to do what is desired without player assistance.  My guess is the CLP would be trickier to modify, especially if compatibility with either or both variants of it is desired.

Exactly as I guessed: a CLP mod would be required to autonomously get the required sims on the lot. Thank you for confirming that, AH.

I've looked at the Maxis CLP a few times, and never could make chocolate from it, regardless of temperature. That's why I don't think I should try anything like that.

The Hatch version is really nice.  Put a bar on it and family sims are prohibited, and romantic sims are encouraged, among other aspiration and age type conditions.  I took a real quick look at his mod in answering this thread and decided on the spot I'm not interested enough in TS2 at the moment to get wrapped up in whether I'd be interested in modding it or not.

If anyone was holding their breath for my nieghborhood upload, unfortunately, I've hit a snag and because I'm moving on Friday, I can't spend any more time getting it finished today. I don't want to rush it out, so it will be sometime in August likely. Meanwhile, I'll look at CH's CLP and the other suggestions and see if any of those will work rather than scrapping that plan all together.

I do this too, if there is a lot of stuff that was bought to satisfy wants, and I don't want them to want to buy it all over again.

I just wish my own back pocket was big enough to store all stuff from my own household in case I need to move...
