New Sims2 player, what mods does she need?
« on: April 08, 2012, 10:09:47 AM »
Wolf's grandmother has played Sims 1 for a long time probably 10 years.  While lambing season was going on she stayed at Wolf's cousins with all the toddlers and babies and played 2, she bought Mansions and Gardens some time back when she got a rebuilt Vista computer.

So here is my question what mods should we get for her.
On the list so far
ARC *
ah_MQ Childsupport
BO Nosimloaded
BO NoAnimal control
Bottomless Bottle
ijAddgender4keylock
ijflexischool *
ijinstsign (This keeps carpools busses from arriving at home businesses/school)
ijmeeting controller *
ijmodestysign (keeps naked, underwear clad sims dressed in appropriate places)
ijteleporter (the cat)
ijschool chooser
No Teen runaway
No Automous stuffing face
No Welfare
No Empty Potty
Sim Blender
SW Bill payer
SW Aspiration
SW weather controller
*These she asked for

My download folder is a mess I know I have a no pet runaway.
I want to get some more BO mods for her after she has played for a while.
Anything else I need to add to the list.

I'd add "BO - No Trash Memories" to the list, Kivak. Nip the gossip and nonsense memories in the butt BEFORE they cause the game to slow down or crash ;)

If you can avoid using IE or Safari on my site, I've got pages and pages of stuff I'd recommend.

I would definitely recommend Pescado's dailygardener, clothingtool, doorbell-quieter, all the noregeneration mods, ffsdebugger and essential, imo, nowhatsthis.

To add to ZZ's list of Pescado's mods, nocorruptdeath and nounlinkondelete. TwoJeff's engagement memory fix if she has FT or higher (or if she's using Double Deluxe as her base), Cyjon's walkbys behave to stop trash can kicking and paper stealing.

My mods folder  stuffed it's not even funny.  Also depends on how down and dirty  X) she wants to get.  Back Alley has some interesting things.  I like inteen, or anything TJs but some may or may not work if she's doing the DD route.  Anything of Inge's  - bottomless bottle, no social worker and a ton more.  Also like squinge's wear anything while pregnant hack.  In fact, several of his are good - though go with BOs feed baby.

I'd get her some basics  - then as things bother her - look for the fixes.

I'd add these mods, as being my idea of essential (and yes, I do have all of the above..and more)-
The "No-red line in Pause" mod
"No Plumb Bobs" mod by Ja Rivera, along with "No Plumb bob in NH" by PsychoSim.
The "No 20k handout" by Pescado (I'd go so far as to say most of the Directors' Cut by Pescado is essential.)
TJ's 'Smart Beds' hack
If you can find it, the "Toddler can't use toilets" hack by XPTL, seriously.
Marhis' 'All beds same energy' mod
'No Welcome wagons' by TJ (I think-or else Cyjon)
Numenor's 'Smarter Lights'
TJ's Visitor Controller
Triplet's and Quads hack
Of course BO's various mods, especially "No Sim Loaded" and "No Trash Memories"! Those have saved my game countless thousands of times from gossip overload!

Yeah I don't know why I forgot No Trash memories, I know I have it, no idea why its not in my zBO mod folder. That one is important in my opinion. We installed her games up to Bon Voyage, she will finish them ending with Mansions and Gardens. Since she doesn't have internet we have to download everything for her that we don't have and take it to her on our jump drive.

I'd definitely go for "Elders sleep through night", but I can't remember where I got the hack, MTS maybe? Either that or Simlogical...

If she likes landscaping, you might try Perfect Plants, though it could be cheat-ish with the gardening from Seasons (I do wish someone would separate the two things), but otherwise is a good choice....

I think the most important thing you can do is make sure everything that you install is properly foldered, and the mods are checked with the HCDU.  Also, explain to her about deleting the .cache files frequently.

There's also one other external program that I'd recommend:

Mootilda's "Hood Corruption Detector" from MTS: it's good for making sure that you can nuke all invalid, stupid or corrupt memories, and when you have those that don't go away by themselves, you can go into SimPE (another essential program) to remove those that didn't.
Link: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=456523

Of course it requires that you get  yet another program from MS to help with the DLL's-Net Framework 2.0, but if you have SimPE, it will be necessary anyway.

I'd suggest Pescado's sleepclock, that in itself means you don't need Inge's mod for elders to sleep through the night, although I wouldn't be without her cribgetoutall and toddlerssleepthroughnight.  For a new player, I would say these are essential!

Personally, for a beginner, I think mods should be kept minimal until play style is established. I made a little file of basic mods for my little sisters for that purpose. Pretty much annoyances and fixes only. Unfortunately, I don't have all the modder names, because some people don't think it's important to put proper labels on files.

It includes:
abortbedmaking - because that kind of crap is stupid
AlwaysAcceptInvite - to parties. otherwise it's too annoying to even try to have parties.
antipeeobsession - less peeing everywhere. Stupid maxis. People can still hold a full bladder, it doesn't instantly release on filling.
biotechfix - maxis things should do what they say they do
BO - Feed Baby
BO - Moody Birds
BO - Shoppers Respect Privacy
BO - Unlimited Sims
CBOY_LessAutonomousFighting - which compliments:
thefightclub - from MATY. Makes fighting dependent on logic, creativity, and number of fights v. number of fights won, as well as body. It also makes fighting more attractive, thus, less fighting to counter that.
CBOY_RobotsBreakLess
CJ-BetterLightningRods
CJ-DumbInUseTest
CJ-FewerLightningFires
CJ-GhostHack
CJ-LockableGarageDoors - THIS IS NOT THE FRONT DOOR!
CJ-NoFakeSleepoverWhining - this one's a lifesaver
CJ-ScrapNamedPainting
comm-skilling - Skilling on community lots. Otherwise, what are they for?
dailygardener
firemod
LBFDeadlyNeckBite, BiteNeck, Embrace, etc. - A suite of excellent mods that make give vampires some excellent new interactions. From MTS
LBFGhoul suite - a set of mods created so that Vampires can turn people into Ghoul servants, influencing them costs no influence points, they're nocturnal, and they don't age. I always add this mod in right after Inteen and ACR.
MakeOutFun - because it is.
marhis-makeoutallowslove-fix
marriage-postmortum
No Weekly Report - I don't like cutting features for a newbie, but this was just the stupidest thing.
nocurruptdeath
nodormieregen
NoMrHumble - oh wait, maybe THIS was the stupidest thing.
nossrespawn
nostrayrespawn
notownieregen
Pet Preganancy Fix
SW-Axe-Throwing-Dont-Make-You-Stinky
SW-CustomersLeaveAfterPurchase
SW-DancinDontMakeYouStinky
SW-EmployeesMakeRobotsDammit
SW-EmployeesMakeToysDammit
SW-FrozenCustomer-Fix
SW-ThrowMassiveParties
tombstonemovefix
Triplets and Quads
tuckinanyone - because it's ADORABLE
tv-watching-Mog-20111028 - makes tv watching easy. Sims don't have to be sitting in just the right place
woohooltwfix
zombieapoc - otherwise, why have zombies?
ZW_TPK_ModularStaris, SpiralStairs, StraightStairs - I believe these files are Zirconia Wolf's toddler and pet stair enabler.

For troubleshooting, TeleporterShrubPlus, CJ's debugger, the Batbox, and that weird little nuke box also from MATY, are lifesavers.

And I think ACR is excellent for all players
Oh yeah, and don't forget the CEP and Scriptorium, just to make that stuff easy later.

Yeah... "minimal"...
I actually have more than twice as many mods, but those are the ones I think are most important/interesting to start with.

Most of the mods you included without the creator are Pescado's.

Is the tombstonemove fix one of Pescado's? I would love an actual link if it still exists. I find it stupid that everyone acts like someone died again if you move the tombstones.

I don't know if it's still available, the date on mine is 2006, so maybe not.  However, I'll upload it here, and leave it a day or two until you (and anyone else) has grabbed it.

Not that, I think, but (a) his way of naming them is fairly unique, and (b) when he started modding there were very few others out there, so I think he just got into that way of doing things.  However, most of his mods come with the RTFM, which makes it clear they are his.  Of course, if you don't keep the original zips, and throw the RTFMs away, and don't folder your mods under their creator's name, then it would be easy to forget whose they are.

Also, I would say that many of his mods, particularly the noregeneration ones, are pretty well-known.

Also, explain to her about deleting the .cache files frequently.

There is a fix for that, as well! Even though one can do it by creating a text file called 'cache.txt', someone else created one for a download:
http://sugahsplace.forumotion.net/t1229-are-you-always-deleting-the-groups-cache-file#32982

It saves time, for sure, and aggravation!

I'm still not a fan of that method. Especially on slower systems, the .cache files serve a purpose in helping speed up load times.

But *I* am not on an slower machine anymore... maybe I should try it again for a while ;)

I still prefer to do it manually.  It takes all of ten seconds, and I can check the size of groups.cache myself, as I like to monitor how big it is.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I have saved the list. Some Wolfie nor I have I grabbed the one you posted, I think that would have saved Rockville if I would have had it then. Now I tend to be very careful with tombstones.

I think SimPe is a little much for grand to handle heck I let Wolfie do all the SimPEing here lol. :ninja:

We kind of want her to play without some fixes  cause things are cute the first 5 or 6 times you see it even if we hate it. My son is finally getting tired of kids dancing on parents toes and he has played since he was 11 will soon be 14

I still can't find the no pet run away. Anyone have a clue. BO does your don't watch kids or pets prevent that?

Thank you very much for that file ZZ. I learned the hard way not to delete them and it was annoying that everyone acted like someone died again when I moved the tombstone to a public cemetery.

Nope, my mods do not prevent anyone from running away. They just prevent the Social Worker or Animal Controller Officer from showing up. And they allow older sims to leave the compound, even if there are babies/toddlers to be looked after. That's all they do.

And soon there'll be a new version of one of them, because I found that sims are still prevented from going hiking if there are babies/toddlers around.

The only thing I wish I had when I first started playing was a smart bed mod.  I would do head count every 'night' and if they werent in the right bed it would throw me off. Also when I first started I would go to lots of trouble making them there own room.
Hope that helps.

surprised nobody mentioned Pescado's lesswhiny, can't play without it, especially in a legacy-style house where they start poor and don't have wallpaper at first, listening to them whining about the low room score gets infuriating very quickly.
