I have searched and tried a few things but can not seem to get this error to go away. I had all stuff packs before M&G and all EP's. The game worked fine with little to no lag. I got M&G yesterday and installed it, now when I try to load the game I get this error; failed to enumerate any directx 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system. Please make sure you have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest manufacturer provided driver. The application will now terminate . . .
I have 4 gb of ram and my graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT. I updated the drivers, and installed directx_nov2008_redist.exe. A friend told me to the later, and neither worked. I'm honestly lost on what to do to get this game to run. Please help.

Check your nVidia settings and make sure it is set to *Let the Application Decide* and see whether that helps.

I checked and that's what it's already on. Thanks for the quick reply though, any other ideas?

Not really - I have the same graphics card as you, though, so I have yet another reason for holding off on AL and M & G!

Trif will probably come up with some useful tips, when he sees your post, though.

First thing I would do would be to update video drivers. Who makes the machine, and vid card?

The computer is an HP Pavilion AMD 64 Athlon X2. The graphics card is by NVIDIA. I'm pretty sure I updated the video drivers. I'm not a technology expert so I hope I did this right. I clicked the start menu, then right clicked My Computer, hit properties, clicked hardware then Devise Manager. I then clicked the + for display adapters and right clicked my graphics card and hit update driver. It updated and I restarted my PC. I tried the game again and still got the error. I have since restored the computer to before I installed M&G so I can at least play my game but I really want to be able to play the stuff pack.

I recently updated my drivers (as I said, same graphics card as you) and the version I have now is 178.24 - is that what you have?

Nope, it says driver version is 6.14.11.7813. Do I need a different driver maybe? If so can someone provide a link to the correct one for the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT. I've been to the site before but I get kinda lost when trying to find exactly what I need. I thought when You updated the driver that it would automatically update to the latest available driver.

That is not how you update vid drivers, unless you know where the updated drivers are. Do this...

    Go to:

http://www.nvidia.com

Click the download drivers link. This will take you to a page where they will ask you if you want to scan the system to update the vid driver, say yes... Install their auto update deal, and then after installing the driver, reboot and see what happens.

Can I just add here that for some reason the scan on the NVIDIA site does not work under Firefox. I had to copy the URL and try again using Internet Explorer.  :hmm:

Yes, I was trying to use Firefox as well, I thought OK what am I doing wrong. I copied the address into Internet Explorer and it worked just fine. I installed the new driver, restarted my PC, re-installed M&G and I still get the error.

Have you tried getting DirectX from Microsoft, not the redistribution version?

First step go to windows update.

   By chance is this Vista?

EDIT:    Get the full 9.0c for devs and run it:

I'd tried that earlier today. I downloaded it, tried to install it and it said initializing then a window popped up saying; Setup could not download the file. Please retry or check network connection. This time I chose to run it instead but I got the same result. I have windows XP service pack 2, a friend told me not to get service pack 3, I don't know if that matters.

Actually since HP was one of the Vendors who installed an Intel image of XP on AMD machines, that was very good advice, but should not be causing a direct x issue. As an aside, you should search HP's help site to see what they say about SP3 and your machine. I advise getting it, but only when instructed to do so by care, not by simply getting the available download.

FWIW, the SP3 issue is HP's problem, not MS's...

Are you having trouble downloading anything else? I really hate to say this, but I suspect that you may be looking at your computer having a case of the sniffles... (a virus).

Try cleaning out your IE cache, then if that doesn't work, do a thorough virus scan and then a registry clean-up.

I cleaned out the IE cache and ran a boot scan but as for the registry cleanup, I'm not sure how to do that one. Do I need to buy the software? I have another friend who told me to try Direct X 10, they have a version available for XP users but if I try it and it doesn't work can I easily go back to the old one. I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to try.

Also, the boot scan only came up with some adware which I deleted. The error is still there.

Try CCleaner for both cleaning caches and checking registry errors.  You can find it here: http://www.piriform.com/

It's very simple to use.

I'd suggest you have your antivirus run a thorough scan of your hard drive/s (BTW, what AV are you using, as there are some that really don't work well with Sims 2, and might even be causing your error.)

I have Avast Anti virus. I ran CCleaner but I still get the error when I try to open the game. I'm running the thorough scan now. Any thoughts on me installing DirectX 10?

I haven't got it, as far as I'm aware - I just seem to have the one that's installed with .NET framework plus whatever version the game installed.  I've used 9C in the past, but when I got this PC I have a feeling there was a basic version installed and when I started installing the game there were no complaints, so I haven't got around to downloading it.  Whatever version I have, I can't tell, there's no version number showing when I do a windows search.

You could try using the dxdiag function from the Run option in the Start Menu, though, that would at least check that it's all working properly.

Yeah, I tried that shortly after receiving the error message. I made sure DirectDraw, Direct3D, and APG texture were all enabled and ran both tests for DirectDraw and Direct3D, no problems were found.

This is so odd.  Your system specs sound so close to mine, so why you are having a problem has me beat.

These are my specs.

Oh, just realised, you have GEForce 8600, while mine is 8500 (My eyesight or my memory is suffering from senioritis!) but as far as I'm aware, neither are *recognised* by the game, but that's true of a lot of nVidia graphics cards.

Do you by any chance have Zone Alarm?

Never heard of Zone Alarm, so I don't think so. I didn't have this problem until after I installed M&G so I can only assume that this stuff pack is causing it. The thorough scan didn't find anything. Did they change any system requirements with this stuff pack? It's just odd that a stuff pack could be doing this.

The last two stuff packs are more like EPs in the way they operate.

Right, firstly, are you using the M&G shortcut to the default .exe?  If so, you will have installed SecuROM on your computer, and it may be conflicting with one of your security programs or possibly with Avast!  If you got the cracked .exe, then you shouldn't have this problem.

Secondly, a stupid question - are you trying to use the AL shortcut?

I probably have SecuROM since I bought AL. I have the cracked version for M&G. I only made the mistake of clicking the AL shortcut once. Is there a way to remove SecuROM without removing any of the sims 2 EP's.

OK, thank you for all the help. A friend was able to fix it for me. Turns out I'm just dumb. I put something in the wrong place. So, that's working but then my LCD monitor stopped working for some reason. Now I'm stuck with a bulky CRT until I can find my warranty and get the LCD replaced. At least I can play sims again though. Anyway, thanks again for the help.

I'm glad it all worked out in the end!  Annoying, though, how EA is constantly forcing us to upgrade!

Do you mean driver updates? If so, that is not EA, well beyond taking advantage of capabilities a given vid card reports as being able to produce. It is the hardware manufacturers responsibility to supply stable drivers if their products say they can do a certain thing. This is why vid drivers get updated on practically a monthly basis, they are not something you set and forget.

No, I didn't mean that, I meant having to buy new graphics cards, new CPU's, new motherboards, new computers...... and in many cases, the upgrade starts to cause a problem yet again.
