Pictures taking
« on: November 19, 2008, 11:43:58 PM »
I would like to be able to take screen shots with Prt Scr and not have to drop the game to save each one before taking another. I don't mind the quality of shots in game but I would like to edit and Prt Scr is better for this. I have Adobe photoshop elements 2.0 but can not find an option to stack multiple shots and edit them later. If any one has any tips and suggestions :cheese:

Thanks Trif I have played in a window before but did not like it much. Just because I could not see the motive bar and wants bar at the same time though. :P
If I can't find a different way I will probably play in a window again.  I have bookmarked your link for future reference. :thumb:

Use a screen cap program. There are tons around. Ones I have tried:

Irfanview: http://www.irfanview.com/

FRAPS: http://www.fraps.com/

Gadwin: http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/

I use Gadwin these days, because unlike the other two, it lets you use just Print Screen and not a key combo to capture an image. FRAPS is for games only, too, so won't work outside a game environment. I also occasionally use Thumbs Plus (the free version) but I find that Gadwin gives me the best result. Because of my graphics card and settings I end up with nice big 1280x1024 BMP files at a whopping 5MB each - they're very clear, and then I edit them down using Photoshop. Or you can set Gadwin to automatically size down images for you so you don't have to do it for each individual picture. Irfanview does that, too. Can't remember about FRAPS, but probably, too. Just be careful to turn off the option to capture the framerate when using FRAPS. Big yellow numbers in the corner of the screen cap = annoying. And you also need to remember to turn off capturing the cursor as well. But once you set it up how you want it, it's a matter of pressing a key combo or Print Screen.

I've tried Gadwin a bit but could not figure out whether I could layer a few shots at a time before I edit and save them? :hmm: If this is possible I think I'll get it because I like the results too.

They save automatically. I never exit the game when I'm screen capping a legacy or custom content photoshoot. You just press the Print Screen button when you want to capture and that's it.

My settings:

These settings in Gadwin allow me to keep taking screen caps as long as I want, without having to exit the game at all. I later open the BMPs in Photoshop, edit, then save as JPGs.

You just told me you play the game at a higher resolution than you have your desktop set at. Increase the resolution of your desktop, and then if you can not read it, increase the font size.

Heh...

If you can have both wants and needs panels open in game, that means you are playing the game at least at 1280*1024. If you put it in the window, and size said window so it fills the desktop, and you can only have one panel open, that tells me your desktop is set to a resolution of 1024*768. Just an observation based on what you said in your post. If your monitor is 19", then 1280 on the desktop is what is recommended. If it is 17" I can see why you have it at 1024, but it would run 1280.

I think I have had it lower because of all the video card issues. I probably have it back to normal now. If that's the case I think I'll try the window again. thanks Trif. :thumb: I do learn so much here. :cheese:
